The term ‘ruby’ refers to the red variety of the mineral corundum. It gets its colour from the small additional quantities of chrome contained in the mineral. Only red corundum is known as a ruby, whereby the colour can vary from pale to dark red. All types of corundum, including blue, red and any other colour, fall under the classification ‘sapphire’.
